useful bug in earlier versions

Postby trallala » 05 Mar 2012 14:23

hi there,
you're probably aware of the bug im about to describe since its no longer present in version 2, you may however not know its beneficial effect:
in earlier versions of vlc player (im using 1.1.11 and this one got it) when playing a 720p/1080p mkv file, pausing the video and skipping back or forth, the video image will go haywire and end up further forward then where you skipped. if it does that and you're using a computer too weak for high def (eg mine: 1,73 ghz intel celeron single core, 533 mhz fsb) the video will play smooth after the bug. the downside is that itll take a few seconds for the sound to return if you skip back or forth from now on but it allows people like me to watch hd files smoothly (stopping the video or skipping between tracks will reset it to normal).

i noticed this bug a really long time ago but never mentioned it since i didnt want you to fix that. the version im using is 1.1.11 because it never notified me of any updates and i found out about 2.0 a couple days ago by coincidence. since the bug was removed i reverted back to 1.1.11 to keep playing hd files (i tried newer versions too, but they would all start by building up cache and it never stopped + i had to kill vlc player with taskmanager every time).

im not asking you to re-include the bug for future versions, but i think the developers should look into that as it may teach you a way to allow people with weak computers (like me) to play hd files smoothly.

hope this helps the project

Or use GPU decoding.
