VLC Media Player bundled with ADWARE

Postby brianrr » 17 Feb 2009 13:35

This is just to help you avoid bad reputation.

A site is distributing your software bundled with ADWARE  . Do you really allow this?

Weird. Is there some sort of way to report sites like this so that they can be taken down? Here it is that they're using property of VideoLAN, pretending to be the official site, and providing their users with ADWARE all at the same time?! That's terrible.

Do they provide the source code for their adware, or are they violating the GPL?

Contacting the hoster of the website with a complaint usually does the trick, no?

Another short term solution, which unfortunately requires work on the videolan.org side, is to detect the other site as referrer and put up a notice to the user. I believe this could be done with 'mod rewrite' in Apache. Then again considering how shady the other site is, they may just work around this.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

And the actually make you send sms messages that cost 1.50 euros. you have to send 3 of them. I think it's a Dutch scam. Damn nazis are using VLC's good name to make moneys!

The videolan.pro site seems now to offer VLC without adware, the download now link on their site now links to the official ircam.fr mirror.
