How can I contribute to the VLC Cross platform Open Source development, UX design wise (cross platform Front end UI)?

Postby mancerrss » 10 Feb 2021 09:08

Hi there.

I'm a loyal VLC fan since the early beginning, and fan of open source, free software, and also a UX Designer as well.
I forever loved all the hard work done on this app to make it play almost every media file conceivable on this planet.

But as a designer and an increasingly cross platform user as well, it frustrates me that the UI of this amazing open source app didn't progress as much as it's capability.
I know this is the curse of open source software, community optimizes for feature before function first, and you can't trust free community work around the world to care about the aesthetics first, before making it work. I can't really blame them.

But I think it is time now for VLC to have a major, consistent UI redesign. I think this open source marvel is matured enough to deserve a better, delightful UI that just works, and customizable for everyone?

The way it is made to function is already there behind the scenes, maybe we just need to work on how it looks on the front.

Design system that is consistent and native on each platforms, but scalable and beautiful enough, that it would make VLC and it's brand future proof and ready for the future of computing, medias, and other emerging platforms (AR or VR, or even Web, or some other

I've always had ideas on my head of how VLC could better look and work across platforms, not bombastically beautiful UI concept that it is almost unimplementable, something that is clean, simple but functional enough to be able to use, open, manage media with it easily.

I wanna do this because
• I wanna invigorate interest to the VLC, not only as a brand or product
• but also with the renewed interest of the open source community to it.
• Make it work better to the millions of people that use it everyday, around the world.
• And design it in the way that we would take it to be ready and scalable for the future.

But to be honest, I don't know how to contribute to this.

So to any admins or developers of this app, looking through this post, can anyone tell me how get in touch to these devs?
How do I pitch this to the community, the devs, to the VideoLan itself? How can I contribute directly to those people that are responsible?

Grateful to those that will answer and reply. I'm serious about this.
Thanks
