Proposal of a more intuitive interface for subtitle management.
Good morning, everybody,
I'm new on the forum, I just registered.
I'm a long time VLC user, I'm very satisfied with it and I thank the whole community that works on its development and improvement.
Nevertheless, there is something I don't find very practical: it's the subtitles management, the way to set them up seems a bit austere and complicated.
At the moment when you change values you don't see the result directly, it's a bit frustrating. I have to quit the software and restart to see the result.
I would find it easier for the users if they could have a preview of the subtitles when changing settings. At the moment I don't find that very intuitive unfortunately.
I quickly made a small mock-up (not exhaustive), to illustrate my point:
The idea would be to have an interface that reminds a bit of a word editor software, as well as a miniature visual of the result produced by our parameters.
We could also imagine that the user could choose from a drop-down list of subtitle styles already set up (for example for people with visual disabilities, strong contrasts or with a typography designed for dyslexic people ).
Even better, it would be great if we could edit a small CSS file (for people who know) and share our styles with the VLC community.
PS:
I just want to make a small remark that I hope will be constructive:
I've had a bit of trouble finding a way to contribute as a designer.
I saw on your website that there are a lot of links for developers (which seems normal to me because it's a big part of the work), but I find it regrettable that there are no links for designers or writers.
Maybe this will help people like me to quickly find the way to contribute to this wonderful project.
