Hi !
If you are using Windows Vista and with Aeroglass activated,
we are very interested in the feedback you could provide us on VLC 0.8.6a and 0.9.0

Be careful, VLC 0.9.0 is not corectly functionnal, and is in a very alpha stage, but we need to have people two or three functions. So if you are a geek test 0.9.0, otherwise just test 0.8.6a, which is the most important to us.

You need to have Windows Vista Final, not any beta, RC, or any non-final version.


Graphic drivers
If you are using an ATI card, use only CATALYST 7.2, not any version under.

If you are using a NVIDIA card, use only a driver above 101.41, not any version under.

HowTo Help
In your Windows Vista, download in this directory http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/ the latest trunk-200701**-000.zip or .exe
The .zip would be better since it will not uninstall your other VLC version.

Reset your preferences.
Launch VLC.

In the preferences, go check advanced, and go in video and change the output modules. We would be interested in OpenGL, DirectX but specially Direct3D modules tests.
Could you try turning off 'hardware YUV to RGB conversion' on the directx advanced preference panel and sometimes on ?

Play some files.

Results
Could you just answer here your results:
VLC version,
Graphic Card model,

Modules tested, YUV to RGB status and results.

DirectX 3D Video Output:
- Colour slide show with YUV to RGB on.
- Works fine with YUV to RGB off, aero running.
- tested on dual screen works fine on both.
- Tested 3D applications on it
- Dreamfall, counter strike source, ut2004. crashed it.
- World of Warcraft didnt seem to crash it.

DirectX Video:
- Video runs perfectly, typically aero turns off
- tested on dual screen works fine on both.

OpenGL:
- Video runs perfectly, aero stays.
- tested on dual screen works fine on both. better even no refreshing
- Tested 3D applications on it

Best Settings
It seems to be confirmed that the best settings to run with VLC media player is Direct3D output with 'YUV to RGB off'

Not sure how much this will help but:

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium (32Bit)
VLC Version: 0.9.0-svn-20070130-0001
Graphics Card: Radeon X1900 AIW

Video wouldn't play with default setting in either 0.8.6a or 0.9.0, but after simply disabling setting "Use hardware YUV->RGB conversions" under DirextX video output, video seems to be working perfectly. Aero even continues to work. I'll keep using this as default for a few days and see if anything comes up.

And one small occurrence I noticed was, when pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del to get into task manager, after resuming from that "Splash Screen" Vista has introduced, VLC experiences an error and has to shut down.

I'll also probably be testing this on the 64bit version as soon as compatible rivers are released for my wireless card.

with all video output modes, i have a poor quality video but a correct audio. this, with all my avi files, that were shown perfectly within VLC when I still had XP installed. this is 2 weeks ago.

well well well, sorry but my hardware is not concerned by the 100.59 nvidia driver. it must be only for gforce 8800,despite what is written in the release notes. Or may be it's because i have a Gforce go 7900, mobile version, and not a gforce 7900.

it seems that i am the only one with a gforce card here?

First of all, a remark:

nvidia has decided not to support the nvidia FX 5200 and FX 5500 cards anymore in vista. This is purely a political decision to get people to buy newer cards, since the support is present in the driver. Changing just one line in a .nfo file allows the installation of the exact same driver. Therefore, it is quite annoying to install a nvidia driver. Since i now have 97.46 installed and don't want to install another annoying driver that really shouldn't work at all, i'm not installing a 100.something driver.

I'm running windows vista business. The results with basic vista driver and 0.86a are:

opengL: very very very slow, but perfect image
directX: image ok, but doesn't resize. Doesn't move either, when vlc moves, image doesn't
direct3D: only one color slideshow
GDI: work, although slow and looks not very good
Ascii characters: works fine

YUV-> RGB setting doesn't change anything

Now for 0.9 with forceware 97.46:

DirectX: with or without YUV-> RGB hardware, works fine. Aero glass disables. However, when changing from a different video mode from directX, it won't resize or move the VLC window (video stays in same place, window moves) before I restart VLC. Best looking and fastest option.
Direct3D: Aero stays on. No video, black screen.
OpenGL: Aero stays on. Works fine, however, i cannot seem to disable the transparent cube anymore, because i apparently ensabled it in a previous version. Other than that, works fine. Bit slow, it seems
GDI: works fine. Bit grainy video image.
Ascii characters: black screen (!!!). Console mentions:

Compiler did not align stack variables. Libavcodec has been miscompiled
and may be very slow or crash. This is not a bug in libavcodec,
but in the compiler. Do not report crashes to FFmpeg developers.

I just downloaded the latest snapshot and playing video was the same, audio fine, video was just shades of color.

However in going through my settings I decided to change the video output module from default to Directx and everythign is working perfect now. Audiop great, video perfect and everything in sync. Hope this helps some one.

Update. While video was working fine with Directx video output, when I went to resize the video the window got bigger and the video did not. Other screwey problems. Changed it to OpenGL video module and working much better.

Couple more (sorry for the multiple posts).

1. When using the directx output module video works but doesnt resize correctly. Changing the YUV setting has no affect. On or off whenever the movie starts vista is changed to basic (no Aero).

2. Using the OpenGL module works, video resizes correctly as well. Playing a movie does not change to basic, Aero works. For me this setting works perfect so far.

Hi,

I'm really frustrated with the performance, particuarly with Xvid in Vista. So much so that after a bit of googling with no answers to my problem I'm gonna try to test as many trunks as possible.

Why?, well so far, VLC has performed infinitely better than any other player. The worst performance I get is with Media Player/Media Center where my Xvid videos stutter and jump every 30 seconds or more. Sometimes it slows the framerate a bit, sometimes it pauses for up to 2 seconds.

With 0.8.6 VLC running in Direct X (with Aero compatibility mode switching in) I can just about watch a 60min TV program without too much annoyance. However the latest trunks seem to be getting better and better.

I'm not sure whats going on with Vista, I suspect that Superfetch is part of the problem along with the nVidia drivers, but thats just a hunch and I've got nothing to back this up.

Anyway, on to the test. My setup:

AMD 64 X2 Dual core 4200.
Windows Vista Ultimate RTM (32bit)
4Gb RAM
Geforce 7950GT.
2x 250GB SATA
nVidia drivers - 100.59

I'm going to test each one with a 350Mb Xvid capture of Top Gear. I'll play 2 mins of video from the start then seek to a random place around half way through.


Version: trunk-20070209-0001.

Windows GDI video output:
.Playback pauses every 30 seconds or so for around 1 second.
.No antialiasing on video, looks a bit pixelated.
.Aero continues to work properly
.Stuttering issues when playback much better than when played in MP/MC
.Stuttering continues after seek.

OpenGL:
.Playback fine, no issues. Anti aliasing on video, looks nice.
.Aero fine
.Stutting video every 30 seconds (for around a second) after seek.

DirectX video output:
.Playback fine, full screen mode does not strech video. Stays same size as original window.
.Aero disabled, running in compatibility mode.
.No Stuttering video at all after seek.

DirectX 3D video output:
.Playback fine, no issues. Anti aliasing on video is a little blocky, not as smooth as with Open GL
.Aero fine
.Stutting video every 15 seconds (for around a fraction of a second) after seek.

OK, so I got suspicious of the whole superfetch thing and I ran the first test again.

I saw no stuttering issues until I seeked through the video. Weird?

If there's anything else you guys wanna see me test I'll do my best to give some more feedback.
