@ww333: I don't have this issue.

So basically:
0.8.6 flips back from Aero to Classic interface with all the modes except OpenGL.
0.9.0 works with OpenGL but, slow. DirectX and Direct3D output are not working.
NVidia drivers seems to behave better than ATI's.

Great. Please go on.
Btw, the team is also interested in latest 0.8.6-test2a tests with Vista, latest graphic drivers, output modules : GDI, DirectX, Direct3D and OpenGL ( a bit less OpenGL)

VLC test - trunk-20061122-1332 -
OGM playback -
D3D video output (default - Falshing colors, Sound synced with time, Aero enabled
DirectX video output - Stable video play, no lag over time. Sound kept up. Resising and Full screen on multi monitor display worked fine on both.
ASCII ART output - Played fine sound in sync fun :)
OPEN GL - Relativly smooth video at 100% size. Video came to a crawl running and resises and in full screen. Returning to 100% video caught up and resumed normal play.
Windows GDI ouput - Stable Aero stayed enabled, Vdieo played smothly in any resize. Sound kept sync. Full screen on both monitors worked nicely.

Personal IMO - Windows GDI and DirectX had the best output and allowed swappign audio and video tracka long with subtitles without error.

Other tested formates : AVI (DIvx 3.11, 5)(Xvid), MP4, MVK (x264 @ 1280x720) - same results - Stable play for all tested formates using DirectX and Window GUI ooutputs

trunk-20061124-0001/ - No options in the menu appear revetred to runk-20061122-1332.

Vista Version: Vista Ultimate x86 RTM
VLC Version: 0.8.5
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X1300
Graphics Driver: Ones installed by Vista

This is an upgrade from XP.

EDIT: opengl works, directx messes up the Window display a bit.

opengl: I only tried WMV (fine) and AVI (a bit jerky)

Video and audio seem to work fine, but the first time it ran it knocked the system from Aero to Basic I believe. The taskbar on the bottom displayed wrong and there was a message that Explorer hung, and asked to wait or close it (the new 3 choice menu in Vista when something hangs). I didn't press anything a few seconds later it fixed itself.

Are the trunk or branch builds better for Vista testing? Let me know if theres anything I can do to help.

0.8.6 test2 doesn't work properly on Vista, some issues with opening files here. test2a doesn't make a difference too. OpenGL works, but bad image quality. And DirectX/D3D aren't so great, mostly bad IQ.

But how about Enhanced V Renderer (Enhanced Video Renderer), which is the new renderer in Vista? A Beta from Media Player Classic already supports it, and it has a very nice image quality and performance. Maybe it's an idea to implement this in 0.8.6 or a 0.9.0 build? There is some information about this at Microsoft's site.
And the 0.9.0 builds are still having the dark video bug.

I hope I put something in here where you guys can do something with :)

I already PM'ed j-b, asking if Vista's Enhanced Video Renderer (EVR) could be supported as default Video Output Module for Vista users.

Got no reply though...

Sorry, I have not a lot of time. And great! you posted that here, which is more apropriate!

However the message has been transmitted but it needs some development, and takes time. What is sure is that 0.8.6 will stay in that shape.

We will see for 0.9.0.

Go on the testing, thanks.

When AVR is in some beta build, can you post it here? Since I don't think many people know when it's in a build or not.

thanks for your help guys;

however we suspect that some vista drivers are a bit buggy, therefore for those who have some problems watching video using the direct3d module, could you try turning off 'hardware YUV to RGB conversion' on the directx advanced preference panel and report back please.

please focus your tests on 0.8.6-rc1 at this point in time.

RE: VLC creates MPEG2 PS which doesn't seek on Media Player.

Postby ryukrem » 02 Dec 2006 19:13

This is not a playback report but an update to the MPEG2 TS to PS conversion issue.

Vista version: Vista Ultimate RTM build 6000
Graphic Card model: ATI Radeon 1950XTX
Graphic Driver version: 8.29.100.0 (inbox)

VLC version: 0.8.5
TS to PS conversion works fine but Media Player doesn't seek.

VLC version: vlc-0.8.6-rc1-20061201-0330
TS to PS conversion works fine and Media Player seeks fine.

VLC version: vlc-0.9.0-svn-20061202-0158
Crashes as soon as TS to PS conversion starts.

Looks like the SCR issue in 0.8.5 is fixed in 0.8.6 RC1.
0.9.0 is totally unstable and crashes right away.

vlc-0.9.0-svn-20061212-0002-win32
Each test was with a video of each type: WMV9 (.wmv), XVID (.mkv), X264 (.mkv), and MPEG-1 (.mpg).

DirectX video output: crash on startup (all)
No other output modules listed.

vlc-0.8.6-win32
Color ASCII art video output: No Problems (all; quite interesting heh)
DirectX 3D video output: White Output (all)
DirectX 3D video output (HW color conversion disabled): One color across entire video (changes constantly with the video) due to the pattern of colors changing with the video's scenes changing and changing slightly with movement, I suspect that the entire thing is just one decoded pixel being errantly copied across the entire video--guessing the top left pixel of the video judging by the color (all)
DirectX video output: Playback Normal, Aero dies while playing, until player is restarted the overlay doesn't follow the VLC player box when moved around on the screen after changing to this module from DirectX 3D (all)
OpenGL video output: No Problems (low framerate on large videos [my x264 sample] or in fullscreen [ATI's fault--current drivers have no hardware OpenGL support])
Windows GDI video output: Playback Normal, output grainy when resized, single click on video makes it go full screen while all other modules supporting full screen require a double click (all)

DirectX 3d output (OGM)- Odd behavior Screen is all black aero still enabled only audio playback. skipping ahead in the files the screen remains black however video does start playing at certain keyframes. Video will play for 3-5 seconds go black for 3-5 seconds and resume. Video then seems to remain black.... singel clicking while in full screen seems to promt the video to resume playing.

DirectX 3D video output (HW color conversion disabled) (OGM): Same issue as before Flashing colors no video. Advanced in video hit keyframe video resumed play for 2-4 seconds and resumed flashing colors. Again singel click in full screen seems to reactivate video playback momentarily.

DirectX (aero disables)- No longer working with this build It was working on previous builds however video was zoomed on the top right corner cutton off 75% of the screen

OpenGL: Playback works decent windowed. not horribly choppy yes not smooth, pixel smoothing looks nice and very nice video quality. Full screen has 4-5 fps and is unplayable however looks nice

Windows GDI video output: Works fine no lag issue no resize smoothing rendering videos blockyer then they need to be.

I am happy that D3D vido seems to be moving along nicely.

Note

D3D seems to play AVi xvid, mp4, and mvk files only show the first frame of then flashign colors. OGMs update video for couple second integers. Not sure if thats any help but I was surprised to see the ogm files restarting video play where as the other formats were not.

Once again, thanks for the reports.

Please focus on 0.8.6 and 0.9.0-svn under Vista Final with latest graphic drivers.
I may write a wiki piece for Vista Users and 0.8.6 to use the best preferences, but I don't know yet what is the best.

0.8.6 and ATI x1300

Postby j_h_o » 15 Dec 2006 05:35

I've got the same results with ATI's newly released driver revision (12/13/06).
Latest ATI driver also fails on x1300 with Vista RTM Enterprise with 0.8.6 DirectX 3D video output.

With hardware YUV -> RGB conversion turned off, I get a nice colour show.

With hardware YUV-RGB enabled, I get white screen with sound.

DirectX video output disables Aero, but does not full screen (leaves it same size with black background.

Windows GDI fallback works fullscreen, but not on secondary screens. (As expected.)

vlc-0.9.0-svn-20061230-0001-win32

Postby Geheee » 30 Dec 2006 19:41

Hi,

I trying to run vlc-0.9.0-svn-20061230-0001-win32 under

Vista x64 Ultimate Final.

I have a Nvidia 6600GT PCI-E card using driver version 7.15.10.9746

Upon loading VLC I get the following error message

Code: Select all

c:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc VLC media player 0.9.0-svn-20061230-0001 Grishenko [00000303] access_file access error: cannot open file C:\Users\George\AppData\Ro aming\vlc\ml.xsp (No such file or directory) [00000302] main input error: open of `file/xspf-open://C:\Users\George\AppData\R oaming\vlc\ml.xsp' failed: could not create access
However the GUI loads up, when I try to open a video file however the program crashes immediately with "vlc.exe has stopped working"

If I can be of any further help please let me know, would be happy to provide further feedback and testing!

Same problem with mine.
First time opening vlc, it worked "fine". But opening a media file was never successful.

Windows Vista Final Business
vlc-0.9.0-svn-20061230-0001-win32
ATI Radeon X800 XL (Driver 8.31.100.321, downloaded by Windows Update).

Go on vlc team :)
Regards,
Simon
