Also, I tried the IRC channel but it kept saying "cannot send to nick/channel" so I need help with that too.

If you want your problem to be solved :* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

Did this ever get solved? I read the link InTheWings posted, and couldn't find any specific instructions relating to connecting to the IRC.

So I think I fixed this myself, it seems to be that you can't message the IRC without registering your nickname.
I followed the instructions in the following link and can now message the IRC:
https://freenode.net/kb/answer/registration
Hopefully new people find this helpful.
UPDATE:
Do NOT use freenode anymore!
The new IRC server is: irc.libera.chat
The new web interface is: https://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/#ircs:// ... /#videolan
