Looking to Contribute

Postby almo23 » 28 Feb 2018 01:45

Hello all,

Like a few others have posted about, I'm a CS student looking to make some meaningful contributions to VLC. I was hoping I could be able to help with documentation if possible. What would be the best way to get started? I saw in some older posts that getting on IRC is a good first step, is this still the case?

Thanks! I'm looking forward hopefully to give back to the software that's provided so much convenience to me over the years.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest, it's great that you want to contribute!

I believe that IRC is still a good first step. You could also have a look at the wiki for more information on contributing in various ways.

At the end of the day, I would say that it depends on what part/port you wish to work on but you should definitely go on IRC!

Quick question: I'd like to start getting involved with the Wiki, however there's no obvious way to register an account. Could someone steer me in the right direction?

The Wiki is a lot out of date, and will be phased out for a new documentation.

You say the documentation is out of date. All well and good. But, in the meantime, is there any place one can mention specific problems with the documentation?

For example, I found that in the Input/Codecs section of the help, all the possible values for the "change title according to current media" option are not listed. Most importantly, $F, which was the exact one I wanted, was missing!

Thanks.

I went to IRC. And found the documentation pointing to Wiki.

at https://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_command-line_help/ one finds the following:
" --input-title-format=<string>
Change title according to current media
This option allows you to set the title according to what's being
played
$a: Artist
$b: Album
$c: Copyright
$t:
Title
$g: Genre
$n: Track num
$p: Now playing
$A:
Date
$D: Duration
$Z: "Now playing" (Fall back on Title -
Artist)"

this is the only placee i could fnd online that mentions "Change title according to current media". But, there is nothing there about filename/fileid etc.

I would like to see a website where you can upload all your videos on to the website and connect to the vlc app offline via a account and password would be awesome

Why not allow registration on the wiki so writers can update it?
I can help with that.

Hi,
Why not allow registration on the wiki so writers can update it?
Because the wiki will be entirely removed, so there is no point in updating it. It will probably be replaced by gitlab pages.
