beginner level information

i am new to the development and i am currently going through the video filters module.....well i can understand the code but it is taking too long....does anybody have any ideas or suggestions what prerequisites one should have......or giving a systematic approach would also be helpful........i have few ideas about video filters which i would like to implement.....just need a bit of guidance...
