Instead of using a bar to indicate the progress of a download (and what moron decided on a red bar with a red background) why not be different and have a stack of small cups down one side of the screen, drops gradually filling the cup up.
Holding the mouse over one of the cups automatically enlarges that particular cup so the progress can be seen more easily if required.
