New GUI

Postby sinngee » 15 Aug 2007 23:53

Im sorry but I couldn’t find a suiting thread to post this...hope it’s ok. Anyway, i'm an industrial designer and my main field is human-computer interaction. I've been working on a new layout for VLC (LOVE the program by the way :D ). I feel the GUI could be better, i.e. more user centered. Any way here is my idea. (hope the images speaks for them self).
If you have any comments or questions, please fire away :D

hi

it looks very nice and promising !

in which area do you need help for the skin ? i may have a little time to give to you, but i'm not experimented with skins.

did you look at the new QT4 interface being developped in the next version of vlc ?
its main is to be simpler to understand for users, you can download it at http://nightlies.videolan.org (take trunk version)

btw which OS are you using to take the screenshots ?

good luck :)

Hey, I really like your design there, I like this one even better then the one you posted in the skins topic. I like the nice sleek Vista black design with semi-transparency and the large control buttons, maybe it can become the new default skin for VLC (absolutely no insult to aLtgLasS' default skin, which was my favorite before the QT4 interface came along).

Here's the thing about skins and the default interfaces, they're not compatible with each other. Basically if I wanted to use a skin on the newer VLC (0.9.0) I could no longer use the search function or certain functions of the playlist, but there are still some benefits to using the skins interface, snap to corners is one of them. :)

I probably won't be using skins anytime soon, at least not until they can function exactly like the QT4 interface. Anyway, nice job on the skin. What program did you use to design it? Can I help too (at least with the design portion)? 8)

Hi guys!

Sorry I haven’t answered sooner, I’ve been on vacation. Thanks a lot for the comments!!

I guess the whole idea behind my design is make VLC a media library as well as an advanced media player. The whole point is to make it easier to play media (either form your HD or from the net). And the way to do this, I think, is to locate the file you wish to play from VLC instead of locating is from the OS and double-clicking it. Any comments on my VLC-philosophy?

j-b, you can contact me at sinngee@start.no. I would be happy to help out :D
to funman: I actually have no experience on how to create a skin (in not a programmer). So any help you can give me is much appreciated :) I use Windows XP as my main OS, but everything you see is done in Photoshop.

Here a small update (I’ve added a library button)

Hey do you think that I can help somewhat with the design? I use Paint.NET, I guess you can call it the FREE alternative to PhotoShop. I've been trying to learn more about skin design from this thread: JoeTheZombie's VLC Skin Tutorial, maybe it might help you as well. I really hope one day skins will be able to function exactly like the main interface. Again, nice job on the skin.

So sinngee what's the progress of this skin? Still working on it or no?
