German translation working at all?

Greetings everyone; belated Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year in advance.
__

I use VLC 0.8.6 Win32, with default / wxWindows skin, under Windows XP Pro SP2, german, with default german locale settings.

According to the directory content, the file locale\de\LC_MESSAGES\vlc.mo exists. I set up the option

Settings > Preferences... > Interface: Language

to "auto" or "German", and I even tried to launch "vlc.exe --language de" - but either way, I only see english menu and dialog text.

I have the same issue here on a different PC than the first: VLC 0.8.5, Windows 2000 SP4 german

When I call the VLC.EXE from any directory (via Windows Explorer, or from a command line) to show a video, or just to run (from CMD), it always has a simple GUI and english menus and dialogs, although I saved the options to use german language and display the extended interface. When I start VLC and open the preferences, I can see that the options are set up correctly, but they just were not applied.

But called from eMule as partial download preview, exactly the same application appears correctly with german language and extended GUI; I wonder if the reason may be that eMule runs as limited user, and therefore uses an own Application Data path.

So I renamed the file "vlcrc" to force VLC to recreate it from scratch; I set up german language (was not automatically detected, used english) and extended GUI and saved the settings, closed VLC and restarted it -- still simple GUI in english.

The funny part is: The "vlcrc" for the eMule_Secure account even contains explanations in german, while the explanations in the "vlcrc" for my main account are still in english.

So this problem is obviously not really "Translation" related, but rather related to applying a custom configuration. I guess it would be better to move this thread.

Are you at all interested in investigating?

Should I post this bug anywhere else instead, where it will at least be read?
