Help to translate the VLC Skin Editor

Postby 3breadt » 14 Jan 2009 18:41

Version 0.8 of the VLC Skin Editor includes multi-language support.
I need your help so that it gets translated into more languages. Here is a HowTo on translation for the Skin Editor:

How to translate
All language files are in the lang folder. Each language file is encoded in UTF-8 and that has to be the encoding of any new language file you create as otherwise non-latin characters will not be displayed correctly.

The file languages.txt tells the program about available languages. It contains entries in the following formate, one entry per line:
ISO language code|English name of the language|Language file

So start by adding a new line for the language you want to translate to. e.g.
fr|French|fr.txt

Copy the English language file (or that of any other language you understand best), and rename it to the name you specified in languages.txt.

Now start editing the copied language file.
In most places you find helpful comments, started by a # at the beginning of the line, explaining the following entries.

Each entry consists of the String ID followed by a | and then the translated text.
To create line breaks in the translated text write \n
In some entries you can use variables which are a % followed by the variable name, e.g. %i for an ID.
Also Some entries may contain HTML formatted text, in order that this works the translated string has to begin with <html> and end with </html>.

I hope you understand how to translate for the Skin Editor through this short information. If you have any questions just post them in this thread.

If you want to do a translation post it here and if you're finished please send the language file along with the name of the language to daniel.dreibrodt@gmail.com

Already available languages are:
  • English
  • Catalan (Incomplete)
  • Chinese (Traditional)
  • Czech
  • Dutch
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Korean
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brasil)
  • Russian (Incomplete)
  • Serbian (Cyrillic & Latin)
  • Slovak
  • Spanish
  • Swedish (incomplete)

That'd be much appreciated. You can find the latest translation files at http://svn.videolan.org/listing.php?rep ... trunk_lang_

I have just finished a Serbian translation for it.
Note: We have two alphabets in our language, so i have done two translations for the program — Cyrillic and Latin. I have tested both and they are just fine. There was a problem after all. I could not use language code in languages.txt twice. Actually, i could, but after i select one of my translations, i cannot switch between these two. So, i have used different language codes and everything works just fine now. (I used sr for Cyrillic and srb for Latin one.)

P. S. I kind of hate those lines with % in it. Disadvantages are because i do not know which word is used and because of the capital letter in the middle of the sentence. If you could change those lines with actual words, so we could prevent these kind of things/mistakes.
Of course, people, let me know if you discover any mistake in my translation.
Also, i am about to translate VLC Media Player into Serbian, because an available translation is a real disaster. More than 80% of the translation is not translated. :?

Thanks!

I added your translation to the repository. It is included now in the developer builds and will be included in the next major release.

The % variables are mostly replaced by names, names of files, IDs of items. These cannot be known beforehand. So the translation must be kept variable there. And as you know with what kind of words they will be replaced it should not be a problem.

I used sr for the latin version and sr-cyr for the cyrillic version. Thus users with a Serbian OS will at first see latin Serbian and later can chose cyrillic Serbian in the preferences. I made latin Serbian the default as Wikipedia says it is more widely used in modern texts than cyrillic, which is rather found in traditional literature and such.

That is not true. Serbian official alphabet is cyrillic. Of course, we have two alphabets and it is true that latin is used in modern technology as computers, but the whole country is trying to "force" people to use cyrillic in these segments too. Some big projects such as Google, Mozilla, OpenOffice.org, Microsoft and some operating systems are using cyrillic (some of them only that alphabet, some both, like me :)) and we are trying to make things better about it.
It's hard to understand and explain our situation now. It's like 50% — 50%.

Anyway, please, make the default language cyrillic one. Don't listen to Wikipedia. You know how "reliable" it is. :)

Ok, yes I only read the German Wikipedia on it. English Wikipedia says too, that Cyrillic is the official alphabet, at least in administration. So, I'll make cyrillic default.

Hello, I would like to translate your editor into hebrew.
I am using Notepad++ to edit the he.txt language file since the Windows original notepad turns it into a complete mess (For some reason ignoring most of the "New line" charecters), so I suggest people who use the original Notepad, please stop cause THERE ARE new lines, you just don't see them, making it a hell to translate.

Right now I'm just getting started, and I hope by tomorrow I'll have it complete and I'll send it to your email.

I have a few questions:
1. Is there by any-chance a way to make the application have right-to-left alignment for middle-eastern languages? (Like Hebrew and Arabic) - I'm sure you're probably thinking that will be a lot of work with the windows editing and all, but I was thinking of just making the bitmap editing and all the top menus and all the descriptions and messageboxes and all that stuff right to left, and just keep the "Window editor (the one where you can drag buttons and sliders around)" as it is.
2. Sometimes in strings there are variables like: #%i <- Are these comments?

EDIT:
Found the answer to 2, those aren't comments, just literal #, comments must start at the beginning of a line.
__________

Good luck with your editor, I never actually got to try and also I don't think I'll ever use it, but it sounds like a great idea and I would like to help you with your project.

Omer T.

The text itself will probably appear correctly from right-to-left, but the editing fields would still be on the right of the descriptions. I would have to implement two layouts for each dialog and distinguish the alignment of currently selected language so that it would look good. Not very complicated but a lot of work. And at the moment I really don't have time to work on the skin editor. So it probably won't happen :(

Hi,

I already checked and you don't have nobody translating the Skin Editor to Portuguese (Portugal) and I and my husband, we would like to help you to translate it to Portuguese (Portugal).

We already have the translation in an advanced state.

Send me a msg if you don't need it.

Regarding the VLC media player translation in Portuguese (Portugal) that I would like to say that it is a mess and horrible.

I already contacted the people a long time ago about that but nobody reply to date. If no problems to you we can finish it and keep that updated.

Transifex seems to be the best choice that the VLC has chosen to publish and create an online collaboration from all the translator in every language.

I open the txt file of vlc skin editor.

and honestly, what i got just a mess such as junk.

The phrases are totally garbage.

Why dont you publish it to the transifex? That's a good start for the translators rather than being stucked with the txt file.

We should make this vlc se become not just a jungle, but a real factor in translating.

I can help translating into Greek, but don't you think that these localisation files should be added to your Transifex project so that they are accesible to many other people who can help?
