can't get network streams to work

I'm trying to play this network stream in the VLC application on XP:

mms://media.scctv.net/annenberg/algebra_01.wmv

It opens and plays just fine in Explorer, but when I try it from VLC, I'm given "Your input can't be opened...check log for details." Also, there's no log to check. Logging doesn't work either. I'm running the latest build. So what am I doing wrong?

nevermind - discovered the problem was a firewall issue
