Breaking RC connection without logout

I've been working with the remote control access to VLC and found an interesting situation. If I connect and do whatever, then stop my controlling program (close the IP connection to VLC) without sending logoff, VLC goes into a state that takes about 50% of my processor resources and I can no longer connect to it. I have to stop VLC manually and restart in order to get a connection again.
I'm just wondering if there is any way to make VLC go back into the "listening" mode when an IP connection is terminated. Under normal circumstances I will always send logoff, but if something abnormal happens to break the connection, I have a big problem. Is there any way to remotely make VLC listen again?
Thanks
