Deinterlacing TV streams via plugin

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and stock vlc version 1.01. I'm viewing streamed sat TV using the vlc mozilla plugin. The TV stream is interlaced. Is there are way to deinterlace using vlc version 1.01 (which does not include deinterlace object)?

I wouldn't mind using vlc version 1.10 but don't know how to install without using Ubuntu repository. Is there an easy way to upgrade from vlc version 1.01 to version 1.10?

VLC 1.0.x VLC plugin is unable to deinterlace video files. See these two topics. I have hacked sources to force ActiveX deinterlacing, it sort of works. Have not done anything on mozilla plugin yet.

VLC1.1.x release is under construction in nightly builds, don't know abut the easy way upgrade.
