Firefox: Launch VLC for Youtube URLs

Postby Chase » 22 Sep 2008 22:09

Edit: Recent link: youvlc.xpi

This has probably been done already. But with the neat ability to play youtube videos right from the URL, I thought it would be nice to have Firefox open youtube URLs directly in VLC. I played around with extensions a little, no idea if this is any good.
The extension adds a button to start VLC for the current video being watched, and a contextmenu item to open Youtube URLs in VLC (or download them).

----- Update 1:
I played around some more and solved the issue of high-quality youtube videos just by passing VLC the URL to the .flv or .mp4 file.
(I haven't found any convenient method of downloading Youtube videos in Highres either, so that's what I also added for myself)
----- Update 2: (26 Nov)
With widescreen / HD videos being added yesterday, I made it so that the plugin has a format priority which it checks when opening a youtube link. E.g. at first it checks for 720p (Yes, those videos are actuall 1280*720) then for the mp4, then for H264, lastly for the low quality vid. Code is kinda hacked together, I hope I inspire someone to do this more decently.
