axvlc.cab version 0.8.6 / internet explorer deployment

Hello,

i must say i am very happy to see 0.8.6 activex and mozilla
plugin to work perfectly here. While i had a lot of crashes in ie
with 0.8.5, this new version works very well.

One thing that might have slipped at this release is, while the
0.8.5 .cab was signed so that one could install the .cab from
within internet explorer directly, the new version 0.8.6 doesnt.

The internet explorer pops up the active-x installer message,
but it cannot be installed due to a missing security sign.

Can this be fixed?

Very kind regards and keep up the great work on this piece
of software,

Sashman

the 0.8.6 cab is not signed, and neither was the 0.8.5 cab; what changed is a new version of internet explorer (or security patches) which makes the use of unsigned activex control more stringent.
Signing an activex control is not free, companies like Verisign charges a yearly fee for this privilege. Therefore, until a kind sponsor is willing to help us, you will not see a VLC signed control anytime soon.

Regarding to this issue: does currently exists an URL, which would automatically refer to latest stable version VLC player for different platforms,
eg. www.videolan.org/download/win32/latest? Currently one needs to refer straight on certain version, which later could be obsolete.

This "latest link" could be offered to users instead of ActiveX download.
