Dell LightFX Plugin for VLC ?

Postby danielrouse » 13 Dec 2006 18:15

Some Dell Notebooks have accent lighting that can be controlled via software. Dell has released the LightFX SDK to help people write their own programs: http://www.dell.com/html/global/xps/lightfx/index.html Philips sells TVs with something they call Ambilight where colored light is projected behind the television ( http://www.research.philips.com/technol ... light.html ) You can probably see where I'm headed, can anyone help point me in the right general direction for developing a plugin/script for VLC that would:

1. Figure out the average color / brightness of the image being displayed in VLC
2. Translate that color / brightness information into a color/brightness setting that the laptop lights can reproduce
3. Pass that information off to the lights on the laptop

Questions:
1. How hard would this be to do for a novice programmer (me)?
2. Anybody out there willing to help?

Any ideas / help / suggestions are welcome!
Thanks! :D

The LightFX SDK contains the following:

DLL
Contains Release and Debug builds of the dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and library files that applications can use to link dynamically to the LightFX SDK library.

StaticLib
Contains Release and Debug builds of static library files that applications can use to link statically to the LightFX SDK library.

Include
Contains header files that have definitions of structures and declarations of the functions contained in the LightFX SDK library.

Sample
Contains source code and project files that demonstrate how to use the APIs contained in the LightFX SDK to build your own custom effects.

Tools
Contains utilities that are useful to programmers using the LightFX SDK. For example, the EffectBuilder tool will help you to build XML files in the format supported by the LightFX SDK library.

Any help or suggestions would be great!

on the page it says:
"Philips amBX does not charge developers to become licensees and offers a range of implementation support and training."

Isnt that as good?

Nope. That doesn't sound like open source.
