IP Camera Record Video & Audio on Alarms Example Shown Here

Postby TheUberOverLord » 18 Dec 2012 23:00

There are many different IP Cameras around these days. But I wanted to say thank you for VLC and all the hard work that has gone into it and take the time to show others a working example of using VLC to record video with audio on alarms, for many different brands, models and clones of MJPEG based IP Cameras.

Many of these MJPEG based IP Cameras, support the ability to record video ("Without audio") using their built-in standard camera interface that comes with these MJPEG based IP Cameras.

One would think, since many, if not most of these IP Cameras, also include a microphone embedded in them, as well as a hidden ability, not exposed in the UI ("User Interface") but exposed in the developer interfaces of these IP Cameras, to alarm based not just on motion detection, but also sound detection, that the video recorded on IP Camera alarms by these IP Cameras using the standard IP Camera interface, supplied with them, would also include audio. But this is not the case.

LOL. After all. Would you not want to hear whomever is destroying or taking your property? They could be ("Saying") something that could help catch them, before and after they are in the view of your IP Camera when it alarms and starts recording video? Seems logical to me?

Because of VLC, you can now include audio with the recorded IP Camera alarm videos, when these IP Cameras alarm due to motion or sound detection. This means that you can start recording video with audio, as soon as the IP Cameras sound detection senses noise, before anyone maybe even in view of the IP Camera yet. Of course, even without enabling sound detection alarms for your IP Camera, your motion detection alarm based videos, will now also include audio with the video, courtesy of VLC.

I thought I would show an example of using VLC for this purpose. This example is HTML/JavaScript based, but housed in a .HTA ("HTML Application") shell. in order to be able to launch VLC easily when needed. You can simply view the .hta in notepad, as one example, to see just how easy it was done, using VLC.

The example Interface, which is free, can monitor IP Camera alarms and record video with audio using VLC, for as many as 10 different MJPEG based IP Cameras at the same time. Here is the link to the working example:

Again, thanks to all that have helped VLC to become and be, what it is. The possible uses of VLC are endless!

It should be noted.

That these monitoring/recording methods should be able to be used with virtually any IP Cameras. That allows/supports .cgi methods to be used, to both query the IP Cameras alarm status, as well as support video streaming using VLC. With no more, than 2 lines of code changes.

This was intentional by design.
