CGI Extensions

I'd like to use some Python via the CGI capabilities of the VLC http interface, but I'm having trouble figuring out what file extension or headers I need to use to get the VLC webserver to run the file instead of displaying it or offering it as a download. Can anybody give me an idea of what to do here?
