VLC crashes upon exiting form full screen

Hi,
This is been happening for a while and it happens every single time (only with skinned VLC, not the default VLC). Every time I play movie from my computer, and by the time the movie is finished and I try to exit the full screen, it crashes. This is been happening with all the skins I tried even the default skin. It works fine if I don't use the skin.

Hmm, does it really crash ? Or is it just that the fullscreen mode (black screen) is kept after the playlist is over. In which case, pressing the 'f' hotkey should toggle the skin back to normal mode. (known bug)

No, it actually crashes. As soon as I get out of full-screen mode (few minutes into the movie) it crashes completely and I have to restart the whole thing again.

Okay, can you provide some more information
- OS (WinXP, Win7, Linux, .. ) ?
- vlc version ?
- logs ( vlc -I skins --verbose 2 1> c:\\log 2>&1) to guess what was wrong
- a gdb backtrace (if possible) to know for sure where the problem lies

- OS - Windows Vista
- VLC Version - 1.1.0 (It used to do the same with previous vlc version 1.0.6 as well.)
- How to I get logs?
- I don't know hot to get a gdb backtrace.
Sry, but I am new to this.

I've tested fullscreen quite a bit on both WinXP and Linux. I do agree there is a fullscreen issue (black screen that cannot be easily removed). But, no crash so far.
Anyway, I'm just about to commit a fix for this annoying fullscreen problem. You should be able to try it with a nightly build as soon as tomorrow (
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/). Let's see if these crashes still occur with this fix ....
To get logs, just issue the following command at the comnand line :
vlc --verbose 2 -I skins 1> c:\\log 2>&1
and paste the tail of the log on this forum.

Thanks, I will try the night build when its available.
Anyways, here is the log of right before vlc crashed. Hopefully I got everything, I tried to save it but the whole thing was half frozen so I don't know if its enough for you to find out the problem.

A nightly build is now available (
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... 0719-0202/) for test. Let's see what you get with this new update.
The log doesn't show anything wrong.

I tried the nightly build but with no luck. Everything works great without skin. But when I play a video with skinned VLC, it crashes when I exit from full screen. Also, just to let you know, it does not crash if I exit the full screen within first 5 or 10 minutes of the video, but only crashes when I exit after playing for about 15 minutes or longer in full screen.

Okay, I never waited for so long in my tests. But, till a stack backtrace is available, it is very difficult to debug.

can you tell me how to get backtrace? is there a guide?

Well, I'm afraid setting up a dev environment on Windows is not that easy.
Personally, vlc debug versions for Windows (found on nightly build website) never worked as expected with my config (WinXP and gdb). I need to recompile the whole vlc with some additional compil options found on the web, in order to successfully use gdb on Windows as I do on Linux. And I only know how to do it from Linux (cross-compilation)

Hi all,
Been a long time user of VLC, and never really had any problems with it, but now I'm having a similar problem (with VLC 1.1.0 and the latest 1.1.1)
I've noticed tho that VLC only freezes upon exiting fullscreen at the end of a video if , and only if, VLC has lost focus.
I have 2 monitors so I usually watch fullscreen on the 2nd monitor, while I'm working/browsing or whatever on the primary monitor.
I get the same crash (stops responding) whether I'm fullscreen on primary or secondary monitor but, as I said, only if VLC doesn't have focus when the video ends.
If I click on VLC to give focus back before the video ends, then everything behaves as normal.
Not using any skins at all, just the default interface.
Hopefully this may help someone figure out a little more about the problem.
BTW I'm running the following setup in case you need the info.
Win XP Pro x64
PhenomII X4 940, 3Ghz, 8GB Ram
ATI Radeon 4670 1GB
2 x 24" Dell 2470 Monitors running at 1920x1200 each
Looking forward to getting my favorite media player back soon.
Cheers

Now, this is a good bug report... I'll check it.

I'm experiencing the same problem. It started with the update to 1.1.1 (I updated because I heard it had GPU acceleration for ATI cards). I usually run VLC full screen on my second monitor, and it crashes at the end of videos. I tried the trick of clicking on the window right before the video ended and the crash was prevented. I'm on Windows XP 32-bit.
When the video ends the second monitor stays black (might be because that is my wallpaper color) until I mouse over then I see the VLC window. I can resize and move the window, the mouse cursor is an hourglass when I am hovered over the window, it looks like this:

The process for vlc.exe is taking 0 CPU and the memory used is a fixed amount.

Finally downgraded and had to go all the way back to 1.0.5. I noticed that it doesn't build a font cache when I first start it like the following versions do, doesn't freeze at the end of videos, and for some reason the video plays a lot smoother. The versions after that seem to stutter a lag for the first 10-15 seconds of video while this older version gets it right from the start. So somewhere between that version and now something changed.

Woot!
The full screen crash I was experiencing above has now been fixed with the release of v1.1.2.
At least it has stopped my particular problem. Hopefully all you guys too.
Nice one dev team

Ooops! Spoke too soon.
I upgraded my video drivers yesterday, for my Radeon HD 4600to Catalyst V10.7.
The release notes said they had added GPU acceleration of h.264 video in VLC V1.1.1.
So I happily upgraded, only to find that the "exiting from fullscreen without focus" bug has come back.
h.264 looks good tho.

Same issue:
"I have 2 monitors so I usually watch fullscreen on the 2nd monitor, while I'm working/browsing or whatever on the primary monitor.
And VLC freezes at the end of a video.
Not using any skins at all, just the default interface."
Just updated VLC to latest version 1.1.5 - no difference.
System:
Win XP
Athlon 3Ghz, 1GB Ram
Nvidia 7600GT
2 x Monitors
Please assist

I've found an easy work around for now. Go to your VLC video preferences, and check the box to keep VLC "Always on top".
Tools > Preferences > Video > Always on top
Now, even if VLC does lose focus, it doesn't crash when exiting fullscreen in a dual monitor environment.
Hope this helps

I appreciate this is an old thread from last year, but I'm using VLC 1.1.11 and this problem still persists for me. Has it not been fixed yet?
Like others with the problem, I'm not using any skin either, so it's highly unlikely that this problem is skin-related. I'm no expert, but my guess is that the re-sizing of the VLC window when the video has finished is the problem - when another app is being used and the VLC window doesn't have focus.
Like an earlier poster, I too am watching a movie full-screen on my second monitor while working in another application on the first monitor. When the movie ends, VLC freezes and has to be exited with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
I can also confirm that it exhibits the same behaviour when viewing VLC on the first monitor while working on the second...
It has to be a window focus problem because if I remember (and I usually don't) to click on the VLC screen before it reaches the end of the video, the window resizes correctly and all is well.
If you don't click on the screen in time, you get either a black (or occasionally white) full-screen window with blue border and title bar, along with one dead VLC program! Click on the red Close Program gadget on the title bar enough times and the Windows 'Program is not responding ' message pops up. The End Now button does work sometimes.
This problem isn't the end of the world I know, but since this thread originally reported the problem in V1.1.0 and we are now at 1.1.11 (when I last checked), it should really have been fixed by now or if nothing can be done about it, please let us know.
Wouldn't the simplest solution be to prevent VLC from resizing the video window when a video ends? To be honest, I always find that a little annoying anyway. If I remember correctly, you can stop it doing it when a video starts, so why not when it ends?
Having said that, I'm new to this forum and I've not read all the posts, so I'm going off to read some more to see if you already have... and if necessary prepare my apology post!
