Access to Title of Track in Stream?

Postby mrbene » 08 Nov 2008 04:49

Greets,

Recently moved from 0.8.6 to 0.9.4. Not super-keen on the interface (too big!), so I'm taking the opportunity to put together the skin I've always meant to (but never had the motivation to do).

Main use is listening to streams. The streams I listen to have the track title embedded and I want to display this information. The variables I have available are $N and $F, that give me the URI and the title of the stream, but neither displays the title of the track.

This information was available in the default 0.8.6, but the quick look I took at the skinning instructions for that version didn't seem to be that different.

Undocumented variable?

$N should display the title of the track if it is in the file's meta data.

If it "should" it doesn't. Remember, with streams there are 3 values available:

Stream URL
Stream Name
Track Name

Currently, there are only 2 variables for Text fields, and they map as so:

$F = Stream URL
$N = Stream Name

I'm looking for the 3rd variable for the Text field.

$N displays either the track name or the stream name. The track name is always displayed when its available, otherwise the stream name.

Examples of what $N displays:

Image
Stream URL: X:\Music\Jack White & Alicia Keys\Another Way To Die - Single\01 Another Way To Die.mp3
Stream Name: 01 Another Way To Die.mp3
Track name: Another Way To Die (set in the ID3 title tag)

Image
Stream URL: X:\1live.mp3
Stream Name: 1live.mp3
Track name: No ID3 tags set or other metadata included

Check out the streams referenced from http://www.di.fm/mp3/trance.pls in VLC 8.x default installation. You'll see that the title of the stream is initially displayed, and then later the title of each track in the stream is displayed.

It is this functionality that I'm looking for.

I'm also missing the track names in vlc 0.9.8a linux ubuntu 8.0.4 PPC for live streams. The track names show OK in the latest OS-X version, and they showed in a previous GUI-installed version 0.8.x? They need to be there by default, not only in skins.
