are you refering to the "add interface" option missing from the menu? it worried me a bit at first too, but it turns out that it's just the abillity to switch to the skins2 interface while running that's been disabled. you can still launch vlc with the skins2 interface using the command line:

vlc -I skins2

( I 'm another user ; win xp ; vlc 0.8.5 )

when you select skins2 interface for the first time like me in audio mode or without any file playing then the default skin does not show at all.

if you don't have a visualisation in audio then you got nothing on screen

the tab on windows taskbar leads to void

strangely, i got access to the default skin only when i installed other skins.

even more strange : the default skin re-disappear when reselecting default when you're already on. Then again, the only way to get it back is to load another one before ( ?! )

for this i stick to the "no skin2" interface.

This is because the default skin interface has completely changed, but the file name is the same, and VLC is a little lost. The problem disappears if you reset the preferences.
the default skin re-disappear when reselecting default when you're already on
It should not disappear, but for the same reason it may be confused and not display the correct windows.
for this i stick to the "no skin2" interface.
As you want. I can understand that changing the skin to the current one is a mandatory feature for you... ;-)
