creating new/modifying existing skins

Hi,
I downloaded a bunch of skins. They are all cook skins. Unfortunately, none of them has what I would really like: In full screen mode, a controller with a slider that runs across the bottom (or top) of the screen. This would make it easier to precisely control how much of the video you want to advance.
I'm thinking of two things: 1. modify an existing skin, or 2. creating a new one.
Are skin sources available? Before I set to to do either, does the VLC engine set some variable or send an event that indicates to the skin that it is in windowed mode or full screen mode?
