.vlt files hidden by Windows 7

Postby voltaicass » 06 Nov 2010 15:05

I apologize if this has already been discussed before but I did a pretty extensive search and only found a reference to this issue with Linux.

I am using Windows 7 x64 and VLC 1.1.4. When I download a skins file and save it to the skins directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\skins), the file becomes hidden. I have enabled hidden files but still can't see them. What's weird is if I download another .vlt file, during the save prompt I can see the file and it has a lock icon next to it.

Again, if this is rehashing old material, I'm sorry. But I could really use some help here for something that appears so trivial.

That's because your browser is not running with administrator privileges (that would be way to risky). And Windows 7 restricts access to program folders (i.e. everything in C:\Program Files\) to the specific programs who own these files or to programs who have admin privileges.
When you try to download the files directly into VLC's skins folder they are actually moved to a "virtual store", but not into the actual directory. (Google for it if you want to know where this virtual store is located)
Either you change the access privileges of the skins folder, so that normal users have full access, or you first download the skins somewhere else and then copy them into the skin folder. Then Windows will ask you for admin privileges for the copying and the files will go where they should.

Awesome, Thank you for responding. I also found that if I just manually type in the destination, even though the files are "hidden," I can still apply the skin.
