interface font - has got changed!... help please?

Postby graymanc » 14 Jul 2010 17:17

Hi - I chose the 'Skins' forum because I guess you guys will most easily know the answer.

Problem:
At some point the font on my VLC has got changed - and I really don't know how. It is like a 'bold' version of some font, but a very difficult font to read. The 'bold' letters touch each other, and on the playlist, on the alternate lines, the paler line is almost impossible.
I am supposedly using the standard interface -- and as far as I know, I have never loaded a skin, nor remember changing any font preference....

This difficult font on the interface has persisted through various updates - including:
- uninstall of old version before new install/
- and specifically 'uninstall preferences' before install of 1.1.0
but it is still now on 1.1.O . :( and it was the same with 1.0.5 and others before that.
(I am running WinXP)

I wanted to attach a screenshot of the interface so you could see what I mean, but I couldn't see how.
So please do tell me how, if that would be useful to you in order to diagnose...

Please - can anyone suggest what to do?
I imagine it is simple:
Probably there is a tag in the registry that has logged a font preference - as it persistged despite 'uninstall preferences' -- I have done a kind of registry search but as I am not sure just where to search, maybe I have missed it.
Likewise I have looked through VLC 'options' - but again I have not yet found it...
If it is there - please guide me.

I would greatly appreciate advice, and in relatively simple terms..
Many thanks.

Does this font only appear in VLC?

For posting a screenshot upload one to imageshack.us, tinypic.com or some other image uploading service. Then post the image here, the service should give you a "forum link" for that. Copy-paste that in here.

Thanks for response, aLtgLasS.

Yes - this font problem is only for VLC.

2 screenshots following your info:
one of Playlist
one of 'About' as examples.

I note in 'About' - if I can read it... it says I have the 'Qt4' interface -
Is this correct? - standard interface? Or is this the problem...??

Back to you... :)

New info:
I note in the 'Fonts' folder inside the 'Skins' folder: I have these fonts (and only these fonts):
FreeSans.ttf . . . . . . 21/06/2010 02:39
FreeSansBold.ttf . . . 21/06/2010 02:39

I found this having downloaded 3-4 skins as an experiment: eg the 'Winamp 5' skin interface is 'normal' (as I imagine it should be) on main interface but as soon as I opened the 'Preferences' button from the 'Winamp' skin - the font/ image interface was as before. This made me think there was a 'local' problem rather than a registry one - (well, that's my new thinking anyway).

If I need to update/change/whatever/ these default fonts - please point me to where to go... (if you see what I mean.. ;-))
Many thanks

Ok - well, I tried ...
I changed the fonts in that folder (VLC\Skins\Fonts) copying in Arial and Arial bold to the same names but - exactly the same as before....

So - back to the 'registry' concept - and back to you guys who know more than me... ;-)) - someone please?

Post Edited: - Addition (to avoid too many posts...)
I have now found on the board this post - viewtopic.php?f=14&t=72986&start=15&hil ... +interface -
Looks like same problem - last post was on May 24 but seemed unresolved.... and the writer reckoned their problem started with 1.0.5... (but mine started before that, I'm pretty sure).
It was posted under 'VLC media player for Windows Troubleshooting' - so - can you generalised 'Skins' guys do better?? :-))
Here's hoping...

Did you made changes to the Windows Font rendering (cleartype, dunno how it´s called in xp).
Try the Advantage.VLC:Sky Skin.

The issue is the Qt4 interface is picking a screwed up font...
