Skin Compatability

Postby Bellerophon » 22 Oct 2008 11:21

Hi Guys,

:?:
I am a new member, just joined. I recently downloded some of the great skins done by users, one thing that did occur to me, after finding 4 out of 6 didn't work correctly on my system, VISTA Ultimate 32bit, maybe it would be an idea to add compatibility somewhere ie whether the skin is Vista compliant. XP etc. Perhaps this could also be added as a filter on the skins main page on the vlc site in addition to rating, newest etc.

Looks like the problem is that many of the skins are not compatible with the new version of vlc, as stated in this post viewtopic.php?f=15&t=51671. Perhaps in addition to compatibility with an OS, we need compatibility with a VLC version number?

It might be linked to the libpng security issue.

i think it is. i compiled vlc (0.9-bugfix) with libpng-1.2.32 and the partly transparent test-skin worked.

Hi, sorry forgot to mention version of vlc I dl'd the latest version yesterday, with regaurd to the list below blissta and heaven are OK, the others I had problems with are the askin, psp, nWMP11 and psVLC.
Can't seem to see an option on the blissta skin to get current vlc version.

Hope this helps.

I'm finding that most of the skins that are supposed to be for 9.0 or newer are still not working right with 9.4

Only the default one works right.

I have had to reinstall VLC many times to use it again

It usually takes some time to update skins to a new version and make it 100% compatible.

Reinstalling VLC many times brings nothing, one uninstall and deleting the preferences folder (%appdata%/vlc) is enough. VLC leaves no other traces on the system. If you then install afresh and there still occur problems than its either a bug you can't do anything about or a compatibility issue with your system.

Hi, I've (unfortunately) wasted a lot of time trying to find any skins that really work with v0.9.9.

1. Incompatibility?
In particular, the current playing playlist item is usually not highlighted if a skin is applied, and right click on a playlist item is not available. In VLC default, these work. In many skins the '-' (delete) button in the playlist simply doesn't do anything.

That leaves the choice extremely limited.

2. A daily updated skin package?
This is curious, as the skin package is advertised as 'updated on a daily basis'. That implies these skins should work in general and are maintained.

3. Restrictive designs in many skins
Most skins I've tried are restrictive compared to the default. Indeed in a few there isn't even a volume control, and some fail to show the current title being played, and a couple show the whole path- or at least the start of it..

Perhaps that last is a comment about choices made in designing a skin.

4. In this version, are there really any usable winamp skins, or have I just been unlucky in not finding one that works? Yes, I've noted the distinction between 'Classic' and Skins 2.

I'd really appreciate advice, as I'm very surprised. I've used VLC for a long time, and this is my first serious attempt to find a skin for it.

Thanks, dal987

Seriously, for skins, use VLC 1.0.0-rc2
