Help with the skin editor

Hi, ive just downloaded the VLC skin creator, ive got some pretty decent vector and bitmap drawing programs (Adobe fireworks, photoshop extended, and illustrator CS4) but I have no idea where to start. Like, how do I know how big to make the graphics and what objects I need etc. I basically just need a templte or something I can use. If anyone can help me, that would be great.

Try opening an existing skin in the Skin Editor and see how that works first:
