no error. There is just lag. The settings of the video is 120fps. resolution is 848x480.

Does OpenGL video output module work any better?

Honestly, I was just fine with previous version which i am going to downgrade to. Idk why it causes this problem. 1.19 works just fine!

Found this topic by googleing my similar problem, not sure it is fully related to the problem of the topic opener, if not then I apologize...
I have a similar problem upgranding from 1.1.x to 2.0.1 except that I have a dual monitor system and the lag happens only if the VLC window (fully or partially) resides on my secondary monitor. It uses 100% CPU (on one core) and skips frames if the VLC window size is large enough or in fullscreen mode. The CPU usage depends on the size of VLC window, if I start to resize the window to bigger and bigger then the CPU usage gets higher and when it reaches a certain point then it starts to drop frames. It does not seem to depend on file formats.
There's no problem if the window is only on the primary monitor, not even in fullscreen mode.
Here's the messages : http://pastebin.com/rraV64RP , this is with default VLC settings.

System:
WinXP SP3 x86, Ati Radeon HD 4350, two indentical 19" LCD both connected on DVI
To make sure it's not a driver issue I upgraded to the latest Catalyst video driver package avaliable from AMD.

Now I am also downgraded to 1.1.11 until this gets fixed, but those who do the same be aware that the last available VLC windows build is not secure so you'd better remove a few plugin dll's (http://www.videolan.org/security/) as there's no higher 1.x builds than 1.1.11 for Windows that fixes these vulns... (btw. any reason why isn't so?)

Ok, appearently viewtopic.php?f=14&t=99507#p334649 (set to DirectX output) does the trick for me as well, I hope the data I supplied might helps to choose a better default value in future versions... thank you for your time.

I'm curious if anyone else has found an alternative solution to resolve this issue as it's... an odd problem.

I have a dual Xeon CPU based system with 12 cores total and playing a high def MKV results in about 1 - 2% CPU utilization overall, so it's almost irrelevant.

Unfortunately, on my preferred monitor in my three monitor setup, the video drops frames enough that it's annoying after a few seconds of smooth playing and I don't understand why this is happening if I have more than enough CPU power. If I 'restore' the window to default size it's normal and if I full screen it it's smooth for a few seconds then choppy again.

I tried ramping up buffering settings but they had zero effect. I've also gone through different video cards and that's not changed anything...

Changing it to DirectX Output ensures a smooth display however it fouls up my desktop experience when I use that output and forces some of my apps to do funny things with their interface.

Does anyone have any advice?

Please, try with VLC 2.1.0-rc2.

Well interestingly this release fixed an annoying problem that's been plaguing me for a while now, between various versions, where a number of different formats would come up playing green with audio.

Unfortunately the frame skipping issue still exists.

Is there any way to disable any performance enhancing functions that might be dropping frames to test if something's not working appropriately?

Try another video output module:
http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.0 ... _output.3F

And/or disable/enable GPU acceleration:
http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.0 ... age_errors

And/or adjust FFmpeg threads:

You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

I tried your suggestions and even went so far as to turn off every frame skipping setting in VLC, I bumped up all my buffering settings (file and network) and I still suffer from this issue. Switching to DirectX 3D resolves the playback issue but that creates other issues with other aspects of the Windows interface.

With ffmpeg with Haali media splitter I play the same 1080p content without issue so I'm not sure what the magical settings with VLC are.
