No sound in 2.0.1?

Postby Fireaim » 20 Mar 2012 16:17

Hey everyone.

After installing the newest version of Vlc-player the sound disappeared. I tried reinstalling it and rebooting my pc but nothing seems to work.

So I hope you can help me.

Open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2), then start playback. See what the message log complains.

I got this:
main debug: audio output is starving (-211472), playing silence
dvdnav debug: DVDNAV_HIGHLIGHT
dvdnav debug: - display=1
dvdnav debug: - buttonN=2
main debug: crop: 179,235,150,50, palette forced: 1
dvdnav debug: buttonUpdate 2
direct3d debug: Created 159x50 texture for OSD
main warning: resampling stopped after 156218280 usec (drift: 792)
main debug: auto hiding mouse cursor
dvdnav debug: DVDNAV_HIGHLIGHT
dvdnav debug: - display=1
dvdnav debug: - buttonN=4
main debug: crop: 185,339,143,45, palette forced: 1
dvdnav debug: buttonUpdate 4
direct3d debug: Created 152x38 texture for OSD

It says something about my output starving. But i'm not sure what that means.

It does for me. Even music. But thanks for the link, let's hope they fix it in a later update.

Found a solution that worked (Windows 7):

VLC created - whyever - a new playback device which can't be "heared", because we hear the first "normal" device.
For VLC to use our first and "real" device we can deactivate the VLC device:

1. Right-click the speaker-symbol in the taskbar
2. Playback-Devices (I don't know the exact wording, because I have a german Win7 version)
3. With opened Overview of playback devices left-click the speaker-symbol in the taskbar click multiple times on volume control (make noises, you can also use youtube or whatever) and look at the devices, which is our "real" speaker (small green bar on the right).
4. Deactivate the other one.
5. Restart VLC
6. VLC should use our "normal" speaker (playback device)

I hope, I helped you with my instructions and you enjoy your videos and music... ;-)

I had this issue as well, and I was able to work around it by disabling an audio playback device in Windows 7 mostly like Teleschinken described above.

However, in my case the new playback device was not created by VLC as speculated by Teleschinken. My onboard sound card (Realtek ALC1200) on my Asus P6T board has two digital outputs (one coaxial and one optical) and my speaker system is hooked up to the optical output. Each output is mapped to a playback device, and both digital outputs are named "Digital Audio (S/PDIF)" in the Windows 7 playback device list.

I could see on the green audio activity bars in the playback device list that VLC was playing through the non-connected playback device even though the other (connected) playback device was marked as "default device". After disabling the non-connected "Digital Audio (S/PDIF)" playback device, VLC would stream sound through the connected output.

No previous version of the VLC player has had this behavior on my system.

A similar thing happened to me. And I also never had a problem with VLC audio before.

In my case, I had two "Speakers" playback settings (i.e., two outputs). One was for an "ATAPI Internal ATAPI Jack" ("high definition audio device") and was unused. VLC tried to use it, however, and the result was no sound output to the speakers, even though I could see green bars as it tried to play. This is a hardware setting and thus not created by VLC.

Using Teleschinken's tip, I disabled this output and restarted VLC. Audio then returned.

Thanks for the help!

Thank you jbutler for your additional feedback.

I browsed the bug tracker and found some bug reports that indicates that the issue is caused by VLC 2.0.1 always using the first non-disabled playback device it encounters when enumerating audio playback devices, even if that device is not marked as default in Windows.

Another no sound in 2.0.1 (though it hasn't been 2.0.1 specific)

For the last few releases, I've had issues with audio on mp4 files: no audio playback. Files plays on Windows Media Player. I think it started around 1.10, through 1.11, just installed 2.0.1, same thing.

Verbosity 2 log says:

Might it also be the decoder? As I say, it plays in windows media ... the high res version on that page has hiccuping audio in quicktime, but the low res (that also fails in VLC) plays fine in quicktime ... could the decoder be being a bit too strict?

It might also be bug in FAAD, but I would guess the bitstream has some additional stuff in it, that causes issue for decoding.

Guys:

Great responses, it got me to go back and see if the author of FAAD would respond ... and he did. What he asked was if the command line FAAD2 tool would decode the audio stream from the subject movie. I tried it, it did. He points back to the way that VLC decodes the audio, I quote here:

"
Hi,

That's great news, so this should be solvable. When using the faad2 library there are multiple ways to stream through the data. The first (and this is probably what VLC (or whatever it uses, ffmpeg?) does) is to concatenate all data coming from the container and use the number of bytes that faad2 reports it uses to skip forward through the stream. This will not work when errors occur, because faad2 will probably use less data than the entire frame before it encounters the error so the stream will be out of sync.
The second way is to keep the packetization from the container intact (as long as the container format supports this, but basically everything except ADIF and raw AAC data does) and simply send in the start of the next packet/frame when faad2 reports an error/warning. Erroneous frames could be played as silence or the previous frame without errors could be repeated (latter will probably sound a bit better as long as there is just 1 frame with errors in a row).
So I think VLC will have to use the 2nd method to deal with errors in the AAC stream better.

Menno
"

Is this something worth contemplating to make VLC a little more robust in the face of stream errors?

Thanks!
