VLC 2.0 no longer plays broken/incomplete files

In previous versions of VLC, I could check the quality of x264 encodes while they were still encoding by playing the partially encoded file in VLC, but I notice that VLC 2.0 no longer plays broken or incomplete .mkv files. Is this a feature or bug?
Thanks for the excellent program!

Can you share a broken MKV?

This should already have been fixed for the release...
Can you please share the verbose logs and/or a sample?

Thank you for your quick replies.
I've uploaded a small (14mb) broken MKV here:

This is an incomplete .mkv file (about the first 2% output of a commandline x264 encode). The file plays fine in VLC 1.1.8 but fails in 2.0 (play icon turns to pause, then straight back to play again).
