VLC 2.0 has problems with extended characters in subtitles

Hi all,
I have done a clean install of VLC 2.0 on Windows 7, and am generally very impressed. I like the way it handles subtitles as a whole, but it does seem to have a problem with any characters with simple diacritics -- for instance, the last letter in verité -- which show up as question marks.

I've checked the font I'm using for subtitles (the Candara font that comes with Windows 7) and confirmed that the characters are included in that font. I've checked the srt file in Notepad to confirm that it uses straightforward ASCII characters and not something esoteric -- I even tried replacing them from the Windows character map -- but they still only show as question marks.

Anyone else experienced this issue, or have a response to it? Thanks.

Can you share the subtitles file?
