Video Stuttering with VLC 2.0

Postby SLR2009 » 21 Feb 2012 22:59

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, I have a Radeon 6900 Video Card. I just upgraded to VLC 2.0, I really enjoy the new features and functionality in VLC 2.0. Unfortunately I'm having an issue When playing MKV Movies. I'm getting stuttering which I never had with VLC 1.1. This is occurring with most of my movies that I play, This is really frustrating me. Does anyone else have this issue? Are there any setting which I could try to fix this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you get your vlc from the official website or another source? These problems are supposed to be fixed in the official release... Can you share your verbose logs when you play a mkv? Tools->message set verbosity to 2 then start playback.

I have the same problem. The log shows a lot of "picture is too late to be displayed". I switched back to my old vlc.

CPU usage: old: 10-20, new: 60-70

Hello,

Same problem for me, the previous version was working perfectly fine.
On MKV 720p with this one I can see in statistics that it is loosing 2 or 3 images per second (and sometime during few sec 20~30 /sec)

I noticed that this VLC is more CPU intensive (~30% during playback / ~20% with previous version) about GPU with both version Video engine load is around 30%

My config : a laptop with Win7 32 bits , Core2duo T7300 (2Ghz , cache 4MB) , video card Geforce 8400MGS (128MB , 16 calculating units).

My vlc seems official (downloaded from http://netcologne.dl.sourceforge.net/pr ... -win32.exe)

Let me know if you want I do some test, I would be happy to help

Here is a sample of what VLC messages:

Can you increase the file-caching value ? Default is 300 ms but 500 or 600 should solve most problems until a better and more definitive fix is found. For lobster though try to increase it even more like 1000-1500 or even 2000

For me with VLC 2.0 my avi files stutters like hell. Fraps avi recorded from games. Others file works fine without any stuttering. I tried open same avi with windows media player and i have no stuttering there. Also how does the logfile work? I enable it to a file i made in c:\vlc.log but nothing is in there after i tested the avi file.

Pardon my ignorance, but can you direct me to the location to change the "file-caching value" :?: Thanks and much appreciated. Sounds like I am having similar problems to the other users posting here.

First of all did you restart vlc after having changed the preferences?
Did you try to enable GPU decoding? Did this file was played correctly by vlc 1.1? What kind codecs does it use and what is your configuration?

I have the same stuttering problem. Changing the file caching did not help and enabling GPU decoding also did not help. I did NOT have the stuttering before version 2.0.0.

First of all did you restart vlc after having changed the preferences?
Did you try to enable GPU decoding? Did this file was played correctly by vlc 1.1? What kind codecs does it use and what is your configuration?
Yes, I restart every time I make a change and check to see if the changes were applied. I have enabled GPU decoding. This was also fully functional with 1.1.

I use an Intel Atom D525 @ 1.8 GHz, 2 gigs ram, NVidia ion2, Windows 7 64bit.

I didn't make any adjustments to the codecs from the stock setup.

Hello,

just registered to share my own experience with VLC 2.0. As other users have already pointed out, the new VLC version shows important stuttering when playing videos. This stuttering is apparent in most videos, but it's specially noticeable in hi-def ones. For example, the debug log I get when playing the Guild Wars 2 trailer "Epic Struggle" (WMV, 1080p, no GPU acceleration activated in VLC) is similar to this:

main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 57 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 40 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 23 ms)
main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 7 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 57 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 41 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 24 ms)
main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 7 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 57 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 41 ms)

main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 58 ms)

main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 25 ms)
main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 8 ms)

main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 58 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 41 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 25 ms) .....................

In my particular case, if I activate the GPU acceleration options in VLC, the stuttering gets MUCH worse. Making file cache bigger and renaming "libsamplerate_plugin.dll" didn't help at all.

My computer specs:

- Windows 7 x64 SP1
- Intel Core i7 940 @ 3GHz
- 9GB RAM
- NVidia GTX 580

In the same conditions, VLC 1.1.11 presents none of this problems.

With your specs you can play Battlefield 3 in Ultra settings easily but you can't play a video without stuttering. I'm having the same problem.

Ok, the issue for both of you is the number of threads. Reduce it to 4, it should work (this will be the default in 2.0.1)
