VLC crashes when saving to mp4

I am using VLC 1.1.11 on Windows 7 Pro X64. It is my main media player and works wonderfully as such! :D
I have an HTC phone where I have made many videos of my grandsons and these are all in the 3GP format. They play all right in VLC.

But I want to share these with other people and display on my TV so I tried to use the VLC main menu function Media/Convert(Save) to save the video to mp4, which can be shown on my TV.
I have done so already for the AVI video produced by my Canon digital camera and it worked just fine (giving me a considerable file size saving in the process too).
When I use the function in VLC to save to mp4 and the source is any of the HTC videos in 3GP format, then when I start the save VLC immediately crashes!
All I see is the Windows message box saying it has crashed and that I can debug the program (how could I?) or close it.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Try VLC 1.2.0, if that doesn't work, share us sample file that can be used to crash VLC.
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/?C=M;O=D (branches are 1.2.x)

I retrieved the most recent branch version vlc-1.2.0-rc1-20120108-1527-win32.exe installed it and tried again.
My test video in 3GP format was 1:15 min and 28 Mb.
It converted fine to mp4 and the size reduced to 11 Mb.

So it seems like this issue has been resolved! :D
Thanks!

Now I am back on this topic again, because after upgrading to 2.0 from the beta you suggested I should test the MP4 problems are back!
If I try to convert/save to MP4 VLC crashes and Windows shows the "helpful" screen about finding a solution or debugging the program...

So I uninstalled the 2.0 release and reinstalled from the snapshot vlc-1.2.0-rc1-20120108-1527-win32.exe and now it works just fine!
I have even been able to change the pixel size of the output MP4 with this release candidate! :D

So my question now is how the release 2.0 could fail to include the MP4 fix (whatever it was) from a 1.2.0-rc1 beta???
Seems very strange to me.
When will a 2.x release be available, which fixes the MP4 issue?

VLC 2.0.1 crashes if you encode H.264 video with 64 bit Windows. This is fixed in upcoming VLC 2.0.2

Just tried the 64bit experimental version of 2.0.1 and that crashes when trying to convert to H264 mp4 format too.

Going to have to install the old version to get this functionality back.

64bits is experimental... Use 32bits.

I've tried both the 64-bit and 32-bit version of the latest release and I get an instant crash when trying to convert. I was trying to use VLC to capture my desktop, and when it tries to save a file it crashes out. Every time, both versions. I'm going to try an earlier version. I'm on Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.

VLC plays my MKV file but will not convert it to MP4.
My only reason to convert the file is to correct potential errors since in its current form I can't burn it to a DVD. (NERO Video wont touch the file either)
VLC seems to be going through the motions then just crashes. No error codes nothing.
Its possible the file is corrupt (although it plays). Have passed the file through meteorite in case that might have repaired it. Have also split it into shorter pieces but nothing seems to help.

Can I perhaps play the file to disk? Since playing works--can I capture the playing file?

Can you share the logs?
