VLC + Asus Xonar D2X = Help!

I have now tried everything I can think of, I have tried older and newer versions of VLC, I have re-installed windows at least twice and no matter what I cannot get the sound to work correctly in VLC!

Windows Media Player doesn't suffer from the issues at all, hence why I believe it to be VLC not the sound card. I get the following output by playing the first 20 seconds or so of an mp3 file. In which time it's already stuttered and skipped the audio a few times. Perhaps someone can figure out what the hell is going on!?
