I have VLC version 1.1.11 and it's great. Sound works on desktop and laptop computers and when I connect laptop directly to my LG flat screen TV in the bedroom (sound does come through the TV). In my living room, I have my PS3 connected to my Samsung 1080p TV and audio wires comming back from the TV to the receiver (the receiver does not have HDMI, just optical) which allows me to have digital audio in surround sounds such as Dolby 5.1 and DTS. I have various Bluray movies on a hardrive that I play through the laptop. I disconnect the HDMI from the PS3 and into the laptop but I don't get any audio return. I have to connect an RCA wire to the headphone jack on the laptop to the receiver which only gives me analog sound. What do I need to do for the digital audio to go from the VLC through the HDMI and have it work just like it does with my PS3? Thanks.

As you say your amplifier has a optical input and can decode AC3+DTS so the only way is having a audio output on your laptop which has digital out, if it doesn't, then replace the soundcard, if that's not possible, leave it and be done with 2 channels lol.

Good quality Soundcards that support Dolby Digital live and can decode multi channel content from PC games and the AAC codec are pretty expensive usually over £50+ but they are worth it. There is a way to convert AAC multi-channel into AC3 5.1 on the fly using FFDshow (I do it with GOM Player) and it works 100% providing you never try to seek through the video for unless you want the audio to be way out of sync, but if you leave it play it will run perfect.
