Install tuners on HD Homerun?

I just got a pair of HD Home run tuners yesterday and had a question about the VLC player. Does this need to be installed for the tuners to work in Media Center? If so, what are the filetypes I should have checked? I saw that it wants to take over everything, and I don't want it to!
