Subtitles (.srt) not reliable with DVDs

Postby jimmyscab » 19 Aug 2011 03:45

I want to load custom srt subs when playing back a DVD.

Firstly when I click on Subtitles track | open file, nothing happens. The only way to load them is to drag the srt onto the screen.

Generally if I add it right at the start of the movie, its fine until I move the playback position or pause the video. After that, the subs may or may not come back.

I've tried on two machines with the same results, why is it so unreliable with DVDs?

Using version 1.1.11

Most subtitle vanishing issues are related to bad timecodes of input video.

Why would a commercial DVD have bad time codes?

Bad authoring, or more likely scenario is that VLC parses the timecodes incorrectly. Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) might tell more about the issue (open it before you start playback).
