Files sent to VLC 1.1.11 don't play

Postby MacEachaidh » 03 Aug 2011 23:47

With the latest update of of VLC, there are problems loading files into the existing session of VLC.

I have VLC 1.1.11 installed on a fully-patched Win7 x64 system. I allowed a standard installation, but have since modified the Preferences by two changes on the "Interface" page: I deselected "Resize interface to video size", and selected "Allow only one instance". No other changes.

What I'm finding is this:

1) If VLC isn't already running, and in Windows Explorer I right-click on a recognised file type and choose "Send to | VLC media player", then a session of VLC opens, and loads the file and runs it. Just what you'd expect.

2) But if VLC is already running, and I right-click on a file nd choose "Send to | VLC media player", then the file never opens in the existing session of VLC. I get no error, but I get no file opening either.

3) If I shut down VLC, and then try again with the same file, then it works.

I've tried unistalling VLC, deleting the Videolan folder in Program Files, and installing it fresh from the downloaded executable. But the same thing happens. I've tried a fresh installation without changing any Preferences, and the same thing still happens. I've tried many different files (AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV) and it's the same with every file I've tried. But if I close VLC down first, then it works.

I never had this problem before the most recent update.

Is this a known problem? Does anyone have any suggestions for how this could be resolved, please?

Send To | VLC media player?
You mean "enqueue in VLC" or?

Oops, sorry ... I meant "Open with ... | VLC media player".

Thanks for the response. :)

Is the new file added to VLC playlist?

Seems not. The playlist stays blank.

But as I said, if I close VLC down and then go through these steps, then it opens up and plays fine.
