You have to just to test them out if you want to see the final result. GUI options autosaving will hopefully land to VLC 1.2.0 so less worries in future.

Same way, you go to Tools -> Preferences... Audio and set the options you want. Remember to tick the filter if you want it to be on every time you start VLC.

If they print error messages to Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) when used, they cannot fixed without code changes. e.g. postproc is broken in VLC 1.1.10/1.1.11

I have read this thread. It is still unclear how to save in Effects and Settings.
My feature request for the second time is: add a few presets to the Dynamic Compression tab and a SAVE button on that screen.
Why, for instance is there a save button on Equalizer but not Compression sliders within the same group?
I've tried to save in the Full Menu of features as well where there is a Save Button.
Having two places to do the same job, one numerically and one visually with failure to save is ALL confusing.
Please do not repeat Tools > Preferences (end of reply) any more.

Couldn't agree more. Mr. "VLC_help" should consider changing his name.

FredNurk,
Here is a link to the 7 step procedure to get things saved. It works fine for Dynamic Range Compression
but while looking at the 7 steps, I could not get The EQ settings right from the helpful screen shots. I have been putting spaces in where none are needed but could not see how to make se,se of one or two digit entries without that. I'll try again.
Here is the link to the 7 steps:

Elsewhere I got some good settings for Dynamic Range Compression (the other tab for audio)
Use the seven steps in other message:
Tools > Pref > Select all (bottom button > highlight Effects > check box Comptrressor or EQ-- not both > Compressor opens with settings
here are settings from Sample
RMS .45
Attack 181.60
Release 386.30
Threshold .00
Ratio 10.01
Knee 5.40
Makep Gain 22.94
