Ripped DVD playback - video stops/starts constantly

Postby tbessie » 09 Jul 2011 07:11

Hi all...

So lately I've been playing back some ripped DVDs, and have noticed that the video will run for about a second, then stop for a VERY short time (1/8 second or less) and then start again, and keep doing this through the whole viewing.

The audio is unaffected, but this stop/start thing is annoying.

This is playback on the machine itself, from the hard drive.

I have played with buffering settings, hardware acceleration settings, codec settings, etc. but to no avail.

Other playback software (MPC-HC, PowerDVD, etc) don't do this, but I prefer using VLC.

Anyone see this behavior before and know some likely causes?

Open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2), it will complain.

Thanks for the suggestion - sadly, when I see the stop/start happening, I don't see any messages displayed. Some debug messages about changing to fullscreen, hiding the mouse, etc, but no errors or warnings.

I wonder if it could be some other component (hardware decoding gone wrong, for example).

It should complain about audio sync etc. if the issue is VLC related. You can test it without Use GPU acceleration option, but I would guess it doesn't change anything.
