Can not play video encoded from MJPEG to MP4

Using VLC 1.1.9 on Windows XP Pro SP3 I converted a MJPEG movie (made by a Nikon COOLPIX S5100 camera, 720p30) to MP4 using the H.264+AAC (.mp4) profile.
After conversion, playing the resulting file with VLC gives a lot of compression artefacts and picture errors (the original plays fine - except a bit stuttering, too weak CPU, I guess : Athlon XP2200+).
Feel free to ask for more details.

Better, even if WMP is still a bit better (it also stutters, but less than VLC).
It also seems only one CPU core (out of two) is used. (I made a mistake in the report, the CPU is actually an Intel Atom N270 at 1,6 GHz) - judging by Task Manager CPU graph , it is about 50% instead of 100%.
GFX is Intel GMA 950 (it is an Asus EEE netbook 1005HA)
OS is Win7
About the FAQ: Input / Codecs -> Other codecs -> FFmpeg
Actually (in VLC 1.1.10) that is : Input / Codecs -> Video codecs -> FFmpeg
