I've never had this problem before as I've used VLC for years, but ever since I've gone to a 64bit version of Windows 7 it seems I'm getting random BSOD but only when I play 720p MKV files. Sometimes it'll play them for a while with no problem, but then sometimes I'll be playing the file for no more than a few minutes before the blue screen occurs. I've thought maybe it's a codec conflict? I'm not really sure but the files play perfectly in Media Player Classic and I never have any issues at all with it, but to be honest I really miss VLC (as good as MPC is). I've tried different builds to see if I could fix it as well, but so far nothing. I'm open for suggestions of anything I may not have thought of yet.

Drivers are not up to date.

I've updated my drivers and I don't have the problem at all with Media Player Classic. It's just VLC.

Try different video output module

I've tried several output modules with varying results.

YUV: No video at all.
Windows GDI video output: Strange "patchwork" lines in the video.
Simple DirectMedia Layer video output: Separates the video window from the main player.
Video Memory Output: No video at all.
OpenGL video output: Laggy playback.
DirectX (DirectDraw) video output: Disables Aero and I really don't want that.
Direct3D: When I select it, save it, and then restart the player it tells me that it's using "Direct3D (XP)" instead of the normal one. Do you have any idea why?
Direct3D (XP): Besides being for XP, I'm really not sure what the difference is. I use Windows 7 so would it be any help to try it?
Direct2D: Works fine but the video is darker and the colours are quite dull compared to the 3D counterparts.

The other three output choices are obviously of no help for normal playback. All of my drivers are completely up to date, I'm using the latest DirectX, and absolutely no other player on my computer triggers the blue screen. The other night I fell asleep to a playlist of 720p mkv video files in VLC and when I woke up I'd discovered my computer had recovered from a BSOD.

I'm able to do the exact same thing with the exact same files in either Media Player Classic: Home Cinema and Windows Media Player and not have a single problem. They both use codecs and I do have a codec pack installed. I know VLC uses its own internal codecs, but is there any chance something is conflicting? It never has before, but then I've never had the problems out of VLC that I've been having since installing Windows 7 x64 and I'm really not sure what to do.

VLC cannot crash you computer. Bad drivers or broken hardware can.

Then why is it only triggered by VLC even though I've uninstalled and reinstalled my display drivers several times and doesn't happen with any other program? It's the exact same hardware I've always run VLC on and didn't have any problems. I didn't have any problems at all until I upgraded my OS from x86 to x64 Windows 7.

Because different programs use different API calls. Some commands can work perfectly, but others don't.

x86 and x64 device drivers are completely different beasts.
