Reduce recording size

Hi,

I'm using VLC 1.1.8 on Win7 x64. I have a bunch of videos, mostly .mp4s, that I would like to reduce the file size of. Currently I'll take a 30 minute, 150MB file and manually edit it in VLC, with the VLC output being 98MB for 21 minutes of play time. That's better, but is there any way to set the recording output for smaller file size?

Thanks,
p.

Trancode with lower bitrates.

Thank you. I understand that conceptually, but I have no idea how to actually do it.

If you transcode via command-line, change vb and ab values. If you use GUI, create new profile (or edit existing one) and change video and audio bitrates.

Thanks. I see how to do that, but I'm getting bad visual artifacts and no sound. But that's a problem for another day.

I would recommend that you use other tools for the job, like AVIdemux. (you can do multipass video encoding and get better quality)

Ok, I had downloaded that, but understanding it is another thing altogether. I'll keep it in mind for the next time I try this. Thanks again,

To follow up: I've been using Avidemux, and having great results. Regularly reducing size by 30% or so. Thanks again.
