TS file playback issues

VLC 1.1.8 (and all previous versions), XP SP3, ATI Radeon 4670, ATI Catalyst 10.10 drivers, Hauppague 2250 TV tuner, Windows Media Player 9, VideoReDo Plus 2.5.5

I have been using VLC for years, principally for playback of .flv, .avi, .mpg, and .ts files. This is to inquire about problems of long standing that have persisted over the years.

This applies ONLY to .TS files. My .TS files are all produced from US broadcast digital television using a Hauppauge tuner, and play with no problems on all programs that I have that are supposed to handle .TS - with the exception of VLC - e.g, Windows Media Player 9 and VideoReDo Plus 2.5.5. It is my understanding that .TS is the native broadcast format for US digital television programs. For what it's worth my source of these broadcasts is Comcast cable, using only clear QAM channels (i.e., no encryption involved).

While the quality of playback in VLC is fine, with no audio or video reproduction issues, some playback controls do not work properly with .TS, and the times displayed for other formats do not display at all for .TS.

Controls:

The step forward/step backwards optional controls on the toolbar (and the jump forward / jump backwards controls found on the right-click playback menu) do not step, skip or jump when invoked on .TS files, although they work ok on .MPG and .AVI files. Other routine controls such as stop, start, the time toolbar slider, and playback speed work on .TS as they should. Interface is the out-of-the-box interface plus the customized step controls added via "customize controls". I have no such problem in a video editor such as VideoReDo. Once converted to .MPG files by VideoReDo, the resultant MPEG files behave normally in VLC, leading me to believe thet the input .TS files are well formed. This is completely reproduceable, for all the hundreds of .TS files I have played, and has been seen since I started using VLC sometime around v. 0.8 or 0.9.

Time Display:
For .TS files, the two time values displayed at the lower right of the controls (elapsed time and total length of clip) remain at zero at all times, although they function as they should for all other formats, including .mpg. as with the controls, above. This is a long standing problem, completely reproduceable. Windows Media Player and VideoReDo again have no such problems with the same files, making this appear to be a problem in VLC. Again, this is consistently present on all .TS files, since I started using VLC.

Known issue. Since VLC cannot index Transport Stream files, you won't see timecodes and you cannot use time based functions.
