Can anyone advise how I can set VLC (1.1.7) to keep the current playback speed when it goes to the next file in a playlist? Or even when you drag and drop, or open a new file to play?

I need playback speed to be a constant value per session (of course constant but I can still adjust it with the keyboard shortcuts - just that it won't go reset to 1:1 playback unless I set it to this).
I wish it not to reset with every new file played.

Modify the rate option in preferences or use VLC 1.2.0

I tried to look through the preferences (Advanced View) on the current version of VLC 1.1.7 and I could not locate the 'Modify the rate option'

Here, for those who wouldn't know where to look, is the address to the latest nightly build of VLC 1.2.0, for Windows 32bit (XP and Win 2000): does now indeed keep the playback rate you set, from one file to the next: Fantastic.

If you use Windows 7 you need the 64bit version here: If you don't know what the others are, then download the self-installing exe version!

Ona somewhat related note: I upgradede to 1.20, in order to get this new feature. But I find it unfortunate that in v 1.2.0 it is harder to adjust playback speed. The slider and the indicator showing the playback speed are gone

1.2.0 interface is still work in progress.

sorry to see you're having issues with the slider for playback speed etc. in the interface to the latests 1.2.0 builds.

I had problems with correct playback with these debug builds on my winXP system. You don't mention on which OS you're running VLC.
However the trick I've found is to go back to the earlier builds of 1.2.0 where they were closest to the 1.1.9 stable release which was code named The Luggage.

Here's the build I've tested to be robust for mp3 playback at different speeds: Obviously you'll have to look here: for that same date if you want to find the equivalent build for your Operating System.

These shortcuts are also essential for rapid playback of files you have to get through:
On Windows:
Ctrl+L - open / switch to playlist
[ - lower playback rate
] - increase playback rate
n - next track(in playlist)
p - previous track(in playlist)
s - stop playback
Pause/Play toggle - space

*For video*
f - full screen
Esc - leave full screen mode
e - advance by one frame, this is the smallest unit you can advance by in a video

You can find other hotkeys that would be of use to you by selecting from the menu tools->preferences
(Ctrl+P for this menu command on Windows systems)

From the Preferences pane, (window or dialog) select 'Hotkeys' which is the bottom icon from the column of icons on the left.
