Problem displaying IDX/SUB subtitles!

Hello all,

VLC was just doing fine, but after updating to the latest 1.1.7 version It DOES NOT display my IDX/SUB subtitles. Why is this? Do I have to tinker with any settings after updating? It should be noted that, IDX/SUB did work before, and the options for subtitle-track DO show up in the menu, it just doesn't display anything on the video.

Had to go back to 1.0.1 to make the magic work again.

Regards,
Z

Can you share the .idx file?

Rar'ed the .idx and .sub file and uploaded it here: http://hotfile.com/dl/107487410/758b41a ... b.rar.html

Hi all,
Just to tell Zopyrus that your Hotfile idx/sub files show normally on my Vlc 1.1.7 version (without any font change)
2 korean subtitles + 2 english subtitles, all appear correctly when I change from one to the other during playback.

Thanks for verifying that solazy! But how weird that they do not display on mine! I've re-installed many times! By changing default font do you mean -> Tools -> Preferences -> Subtitles... -> Fonts ?

It was on Arial by default and changed it to Times New Roman and System without any success.

I got it working now.... I think. The problem was that I had a folder with this sign in it: "#", as soon as I removed that sign, the subtitles worked.

Thanks for the help and keep up the good work!

Bravo Zopyrus and I confirm it : if the folder name contains the # sign, then idx/sub don't show anything
(i did this new try with others idx/sub than yours, just to double check)
Maybe this will be useful to Vlc programmers.

What was the full path to the subtitles file?

Hi jean-baptiste (bye j-b lol)

In my test, it goes that way, with 3 files only in this new folder :
I:\videos\try#folder\movie.avi
I:\videos\try#folder\movie.idx
I:\videos\try#folder\movie.sub

Then a double clic on the avi (in windows explorer) opens Vlc with the exact following error message :
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "I:\VIDEOS\try".
VLC can't recognize the input's format:
The format of 'file:///I:/VIDEOS/try%23folder/movie.idx' cannot be detected. Have a look at the log for details.

This is what shows the menu Video => Subtitle tracks :
Disable (ticked)
Track 1 [english]
Track 2 [french]

Now even if you select Track 1 or 2, no subtitle will appear.

*************
Other tests :
1) No error if it was a .srt file instead of idx/sub files !
So .srt file opens correctly when "#" is in the folder name, but idx/sub never open.

2) Same error with idx/sub if the folder is named try# folder (with a space between # and f) instead of try#folder

3) No more error as soon as the folder is named tryfolder (without #)
Hope this will help.

*************
PS: you asked me to remind you about the "fuzzyness detection" which is a bit ill actually, opening subtitle files that have nothing to do with the avi, for example, with these 3 files in the same folder :

house.avi
Dr Edwards house is white.avi
Dr Edwards house is white.srt

Double clicking on house.avi opens automatically...the "Dr Edwards house is white.srt" ... because the word "house" is found in its title. This happened to me for real !

Maybe you already fixed it ?

I can confirm that this issue still exists on VLC v1.1.4 (Windows 7 SP1 x64). IDX/SUB files will load/appear in menu but won't display on the video, if the video is in a path which contains '#' characters (e.g. "C:\#Downloads#"). However, moving it to a path which contains no '#' characters will display the subtitles without any problem. SRT subtitles OTOH work just fine in paths with '#' characters...

1.1.4 is too old.

Indeed it is, thanks for notifying me. Version 2.0.2 plays IDX/SUB subtitles without any problem, so this issue is solved. FFmpeg hardware decoding now works for me as well, v1.1.4 produced a green-screen for MPEG2 videos when turned on. Version 2.0.2 solved this...
