I've done several searches and found many references to a similar problem, but found no solutions. I'm running a fresh install of VLC 1.1.7 on Windows 7, 64bit version, connecting over ethernet to a Linux file server running samba. The share is mapped in Windows as drive Z:.

VLC is able to open all other files I've tried from the same mounted drive, no problem. This isn't a permissions problem. If I open the file with WMP from the same location, it opens. It's not a problem with the file. If I copy it to the local drive, it opens in VLC.

The initial error is:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///Z:/TV/Top%20Gear/Season%2016/16x03.avi'. Check the log for details.

I tried process monitor to see if anything useful was shown when opening the file. This might be a little difficult to read, but this is all I get:

The "Buffer Overflow" result seems to not be indicative of a particular failure, the same exact thing happens when successfully opening the file from the local filesystem or with WMP from the mapped drive.

I'm out of ideas, but totally happy to troubleshoot further if it'll help pinpoint the exact source of the problem.

Hi everyone!

I have same problem. If I play dvd from mapped drive (Z:) or \\server\data\dvd\VIDEO_TS\ , VLC doesnt recognize it.
But If a copy same dvd to my windows desktop, VLC play DVD correctly.

For future reference, I just figured this out. The problem file(s) apparently got created with a timestamp at the unix epoch, resulting in a timestamp of "1969-12-31 15:59" (at least in PST, which is GMT-8).

At any rate, this causes the file to fail to open (for whatever reason.. be it a VLC bug or something in Windows).

The fix is simple.. At the top of your filesystem, run this command:
To be clear, what this command is doing is finding any file modified more than 14,600 days ago (roughly 40 years ago, or before 1972), then calling the 'touch' command on it to update the timestamp. Presto, problem solved.
