Warning about VideoLan

Postby Dabola » 15 Feb 2011 09:49

Because of former problems with spyware I am very focused on security. Due to that I focuses on the details in my firewall, Comodo.

A few days ago I wanted to make another control of which files are registered as Trusted files in Comodo's section Defense +. A database of "safe executable s". After hundreds of programs installed I have got 60 files registered as safe. Until i installed VLC. Then the number of files has almost doubled! The installer of VLC added further 48! (No other software or co. has registered more than four lines on that list). Everything mixed. Due to that I had to spend a long time deleting... Now finally VLC has been removed and my important database over safe applications are possible to use/understand/read once again.

So if you are conserned about security, use Comodo Firewall, and want to keep control by yourself; don't install VLC at this stage! From now on Media Player Classic has taken over.

You didn't install a genuine VLC!

I have also installed VLC (and Comodo) in a virtual version of Win7. Made by Virtualbox. Here it is worse! The installer has registered all the 273 dll's in C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins as Trusted Files in Comodo! Plus the program itself, the uninstaller, cache-gen and three other dll's. Because of this VLC occupy more than 50% of the total list of trusted files.

A printscreen of the list; Image.

VLC cannot register itself in your comodo thing, since we have no idea what this is.
Complain to comodo.

If this is caused by Comodo, then I am sorry to criticise VLC. I just thought you should know about this problem. Comodo is one of the most common firewall in win' systems. I know that you have spent a lot of time to make a free and very useful media player for everyone. These two programs should work together! Good luck with VideoLan!

A final comment since I am communicating with you directly; As a member of a norwegian choir I have made a lot of mp4 files for training. As you know there are most common four different voices in a choir; Sopranos, Altos, Tenores and Bass. In my mp4 files the voice "in focus" are channeled to the right loudspeaker and the three others to the left. Then everyone can choose by themself how much they will hear of the three other voices - by the balance. What I am missing in VideoLan is a more easy way to control the balance.

Try to change the balance of this file; http://home.broadpark.no/~laroald/test. ... Skogen.mp4 Just imagine if I could tell all the other members; -Download and install VLC. This program has a smart shortcut to open the balance controller. -By pessing two keys on the keyboard, ...... you can choose by yourself wether you want to hear just your own voice (100% right), a mix or just the three other voices.. (just as a proposal)

Yes, channel mixing is lacking in VLC

... you can choose by yourself wether you want to hear just your own voice (100% right), a mix or just the three other voices...
Hi Dabola,
Actually it should be possible, as shown in this picture :

Image

* Clic on Left = just the 3 other voices (in both channels, yes !)
* Clic on Right = your own voice (in both channels)
* Clic on Stereo (default) or Reverse Stereo = the mix

Now don't ask me 25% of left channel and 75% of right channel haha :D
